Después de graduarse de la universidad, el autor comenzó una odisea transcontinental de 14.000 kilómetros por Sudamérica a finales de 1977. Su motivación principal era hallar un puesto docente en una institución internacional educativa avanzada con un ingreso estable.
La fase inicial consistió en un viaje en tren de Buenos Aires a Mendoza y luego cruzar la Cordillera de los Andes en el Ferrocarril Transandino (que, desafortunadamente, ya no existe). En Chile, experimentó la tensa atmósfera política del régimen militar de Augusto Pinochet, donde la fuerte presencia policial imponía un estado de intimidación. Las consultas de empleo en la zona de Santiago no ofrecieron oportunidades adecuadas, lo que lo llevó a la segunda etapa del viaje: un viaje en autobús a través del árido desierto de Atacama para llegar a Arica, en el extremo norte del país.
El ferrocarril Arica-La Paz ascendía por la vasta meseta andina hasta Bolivia y una de sus capitales: La Paz. Debilitado por el mal de altura (soroche), experimentó un impactante conflicto ético que surgió durante una entrevista para una prestigiosa cátedra de matemáticas en la universidad local. Su viaje continuó luego hacia altitudes más bajas en Cochabamba y Santa Cruz, donde tenía pocas perspectivas de empleo. Siguiendo hacia el este, el viaje incluyó el infame ferrocarril Santa Cruz-Puerto Suárez, conocido inquietantemente como el "Tren de la Muerte" (o trem da morte en portugués) debido a su historia de numerosas víctimas fatales.
Una vez en Brasil, y tras un largo viaje en tren de Corumbá a São Paulo en el segundo "tren de la muerte", se centró en entrevistas en importantes instituciones de São Paulo, Río de Janeiro y Belo Horizonte. Durante su estancia en Río, visitó sus principales lugares de interés: las playas de Copacabana e Ipanema, el Pan de Azúcar y el cerro del Corcovado.
El viaje de regreso lo llevó a las internacionalmente famosas Cataratas del Iguazú, en la frontera entre Brasil y Argentina, donde sus habilidades de traducción fueron solicitadas por algunas turistas culturalmente ignorantes y desagradables.
La culminación de esta odisea lo encontró de regreso a su hogar en Buenos Aires a fines de enero de 1978. Esta aventura transcontinental, que abarcó resistencia física y la navegación a través de complejidades culturales e institucionales, se convirtió en un momento crucial; moldeó su confianza en sí mismo e inició su trayectoria hacia una carrera internacional.
